Is Bleeding And Stomach Cramps During Pregnancy Normal?

default
Posted on Fri, 29 Apr 2016
Question: I am five weeks pregnant. I am not cramping. I did just release a small clot. In November I had a miscarriage at five weeks. I did some research online and know it is normal for some women to bleed during their pregnancy. Due to my recent misscarriage should I go to urgent care to be examined?

Hello
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Yes, please go to urgent care to be examined.
At the most, it would be precaution, if all turns out to be well.
It is quite normal for some women to bleed a bit, or pass a small clot during pregnancy.
As long as you are not cramping or bleeding profusely, there is nothing to worry about.
Just have an exam, in view of your recent miscarriage.
It would reassure you.
All the best.
Please feel free to discuss further.

Thank you for your speedy response. I have a question in regards to an abortion I had in 2013. Is it possible that something may have gone wrong during this procedure? If so, is there away to confirm my uterus is healthy enough to carry a baby full term?

Did you have a surgical abortion, or a medical one ?

I'm not sure what the difference is, I can tell you it was at a women's clinic and it was a suction force that was used to end pregnancy. Much like a vacuum type suction.

Detailed Answer:
It was a surgical abortion.
It normally does not lead to a weakening of the uterus.
It may cause infections and adhesions that lead to difficulties in conception, but it does not hinder your capacity to carry a baby to term.
Rest right now, have an internal exam, and avoid any kind of stress, exertion, travelling, intercourse etc.
DId you go to the Er ?

Yes, I did go to the E.R. and I was able to see my baby's heart beat. They also told me the samething the about not having any intercourse. They did not mention the no traveling part. Would this adivse for the above mentioned for me to avoid be for the duration of my pregnancy? Also, would a 5-6 hour drive be considered traveling? Thank you so much for your help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear.
Congratulations, once the heartbeat is seen, chances of miscarriage are reduced by 20 - 30 %, so do not worry.
Stress and anxiety can lead to complications too.
The advice holds true atleast for the initial 12 weeks of your pregnancy.
No point risking even a 5 - 6 hour drive until you cross the 12 - 14 week mark.
You may then consider it, if it is necessary and non strenuous, with lots of breaks and good hydration.
Take care.
And use the link I have attached earlier to reach me whenever you feel the need to do so.
God bless.

I'm concerned because I've started bleeding. It's about the size of a teaspoon. I do have minor cramping and I have left work early today to come home and rest. I'm getting about seven hours of sleep at night. When I wake up I feel as though I have not slept at all. I am taking prenatal vitamins. This morning they came back up. I do not have a OBGYN yet. I am in the process of looking into getting Obamacare. Any advise you can give would be greatly appreciated. Again, thank you for all your help.

Detailed Answer:
I would advise - total rest ( please do not work for a few days until the bleeding lets down a bi ), avoid travelling, stress, intercourse and anxiety.
See an OB GYN at the earliest.
Get a repeat scan since you have bled again, to confirm the heartbeat.
Take care.
Prayers for you.
