Is Blood Pressure Value Of 120/75 A Cause For Concern?
I would recommend as follows:
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCH!
Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that your blood pressure value when standing shows a lightly increase in diastolic component, which is considered a borderline value.
Nevertheless, when judging about the possibility of hypertension, it is important to consider several BP values throughout the day for at least a couple of days.
In your average BP value is above 140 and/or 90 mmHg, then it could be concluded about a steady hypertension.
In such case it would be necessary to consider some measures helpful to reduce those BP values (decreasing body weight when over-weighted, increasing daily physical activities, avoiding close smoking contacts, following a healthy diet [Mediterranean diet would be strongly recommended], controlling blood glucose values, etc.).
And if those measures would not be sufficient, then to consider starting any antihypertensive medications under your attending doctor supervision.
But, actually, you don't have to worry about, as your single BP value is not considered problematic. Just keep monitoring your blood pressure for a couple of days to be sure no higher values are frequently found, and follow the above recommended issues on an optimal life style.
When you have those BP values, I would like to make a review.
So, please do not hesitate to contact me and upload that information.
Hope to have been helpful to you!
Kind regards,
Dr. Iliri
Do you have a reason why bottom number would stay that high? I do have a anxiety issue.
Ive been feeling really light headed

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Having systolic BP values of 124-128 mmHg and diastolic 91-93 mmHg reflects a narrow pulse pressure (difference between systolic and diastolic values).
This fact (narrow pulse pressure), in the presence of normal systolic BP values leads to the necessary confirmation of BP measurement accuracy, because in several studies, such a picture has been concluded an erroneous overestimation of diastolic blood pressure values (especially when using auscultatory measurement technique).
So the first step to be done is confirmation of those values by repeated and accurate BP measurements.
From the other side, a diastolic BP around 90 mmHg (91-93) is not considered problematic, and could be managed by properly controlling potential triggering factors (which in fact I mentioned earlier in our thread).
So, increased body weight, non-healthy diet (rich in saturated fat), sedentary life-style, smoking and alcohol, etc. and anxiety as well, may lead to increased diastolic BP values.
Thus, controlling the above factors may hep in preventing a real diastolic hypertension in the future.
Coming to this point, I recommend you to perform a medical checkup: a careful physical exam and additional tests:
- resting ECG,
- chest X ray study,
- complete blood count,
- thyroid function tests,
- AST & ALT,
- renal function tests
- blood electrolytes level
- blood lipid profile,
- blood fasting glucose level
for excluding any secondary predisposing factor increased blood pressure.
In case of a normal tests results, then anxiety disorders should be properly addressed.

Dr. Iliri
