Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Corticosteroids given systemically can definitely raise blood sugar.
I recommend you continue to eat a little bit (don't fast), but also take your blood sugar lowering medicine. If you take insulin, follow the sliding scale instructions your doctor gave you and increase the dose.
If you take an oral blood sugar lowering medicine, you will need to adjust that to compensate for the increased blood sugar. If a plan was not given for this, call your doctor's number and talk with him/her or the doctor on call for directions as they will have access to your records of what your blood sugars are normally, what meds you are taking and the dose.
The steroid may continue to raise your blood sugar tomorrow as well, so in addition to carefully lowering your sugars now, you will need to continue to monitor it.
If you have no sliding scale of insulin, and no written plan with oral blood sugar lowering medication for situations of marked elevation, and you can't get ahold of your doctor or doctor on call, then go to the urgent care clinic or ER. There they can also test your urine for ketones.
I hope this information helps.
