Is Conception Possible While Having An Umbilical Hernia?

I am a healthy, 40 year old woman. A year ago I found out that I have an umbilical hernia. My family doctor referred me to a surgeon to see if I required surgery. The surgeon checked me out and said that since it is not causing me any trouble that I do not require surgery unless it becomes a problem at some point. I would like to try to have another baby over the next year (I currently have two children) and am wondering if it safe to be pregnant while I have an umbilical hernia? My previous pregnancies were healthy and without complications.
Thank you!
It is not safe to be pregnant and having an umbilical hernia...
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking Healthcaremagic.
I am Dr.Endri Katro and I will be answering at your questions.
It is not safe being pregnant and having an umbelical hernia.
With passing of months, the pressure inside your abdomen will increase. In this way,the hernia will get bigger and bigger and there is a chance for intestine (in most of the cases) or omentum (fat inside our abdomen) to get blocked (strangulated) in your hernia. If this happens,it might harm you or your baby because it will be an emergency.
But there is also the posibility to have a normal pregnancy.
If I was your caring doctor I would sugest to not risk. Do the surgery before getting pregnant,at least 6 months before. In this way you will not have any kind of extra risk to harm you or your baby.
If you have any other question, don't hesitate to contact me.
Wish you good health.
