Is Dry Drowning Possible In A 2 Year Old Child After Swallowing Sea Water?
Question: My two year old was in the ocean today and I believe swallowed some water when an unexpected wave came. She was fine but is now coughing a lot while sleeping. I am worried about dry drowning or secondary drowning. She was herself all night but is now coughing a lot. Should I be concerned?
Brief Answer:
should recover soon
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
If your child had been well all night after swallowing seawater I don't think there is any reason for worry.
At the most she could have a pharyngitis because of sea water and pollutants.
You can try over the counter cough relief like benadryl children's syrup.
If not settling or if she develops fast breathing you need to take her to your pediatrician.
Wishing your child good health
And speedy recovery.
