Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Dose Of Benadryl Is Safe For A Child During Night?
My 10 year old son is on 50 mg Vyvanse and had been taking 5 mg of Melatonin to sleep but it does not seem to be working any more. I tried Benadryl a couple of times and it seems to help him sleep. Is it okay to give him a childs dose of Benadryl at night?
Benadryl is generally used as an antihistamine to combat cold and cough in kids and elderly alike. One of the main side effects of Benadryl is sedation. This drowsiness if persistent may actually impair gross motor reflexes and even coordination.
Even though sleeping aids may work temporarily on children, the underlying cause for insomnia needs to be addressed with their pediatrician. Any physical or psychological cause needs to be addressed with both the child and the parents. Even if medication might be warranted, a second generation antihistamine is more preferred to Benadryl for the same.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Sreeja, General & Family Physician
