Posted on Wed, 26 Apr 2017
Question: I have been taking augmentin for 6 days at the maximum dos for a cat bites. I have had explosive diarrhea
for three days now and my lower intestines are very sore. I was told to take a ten day course. I dont want to continue the medication due to the side effects. My wounds are healing some totally healed already. Can I safely stop? Also what are the risks if I stop and what are the risks if I continue in spite of the side effect?

Brief Answer:
diarrhea is a good reason to stop

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

one of the most common side effects of antibiotics is diarrhea. Diarrhea can be benign and self-limited (after stopping the antibiotic) or pretty serious with severe colitis, inflammation and fever. Stopping the antibiotic suffices in the less severe cases to 'fix' the problem. In the more severe cases, treatment might be required.

So stopping the antibiotic sounds like a good idea particularly if the injury site was not visibly infected (pus, significant swelling and pain or even fever). The best thing to do is to contact the doctor who examined you in the first place. Your doctor would have a much better idea of how risky is your injury.

So in conclusion, stopping the antibiotic is the recommended course of action when diarrhea starts, particularly if it's severe and the injury itself is not.

I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!
