Is Fluoroscopy X-ray Safe For A Patient With Sensitive Esopagus?
Im struggling with reflux and stomach problems; and the doctors have done many test and in the upcoming weeks I'll do more. They can find anything and maybe it will turn out that I just have a very sensitive esopagus.
in 2013 I did a ct-scan and barium test. Just to make sure there wasn't anything else going on.
2015 I did a fluoroscopy(contrast test) where the bed was rotating and checking my LEX strength.
now next week; they want to do this new high resolution manometry video with fluoroscopy(contrast test) all together.
I'm really worrying about radiation and I want to be able to get as few radiation dose as possible.
Can you tell me; is fluoroscopy just as dangerous as CT_scan ? this is a live-video x-ray ? and reading on the internet I get scared.
can you tell me more about this and maybe help me be calm ?
Best regards. XXXXXXX
Fluoroscopy gives you a lot of radiation.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thank you for the query.
Generally fluoroscopy x-ray dosage depends of the test duration. However in most cases you get more radiation from fluoroscopy than from CT (lets say CT is like 300 of chest x-rays and fluoroscopy is like a 1000 of chest x-rays).
Fluoroscopy is a live video x-ray.
The point is if you really need this test? As you have acid reflux problems you seem to be a great candidate for a laparoscopic surgery called fundoplication. Your age and lack of PPIs effect makes the surgery natural choice.
Before this surgery manometry of the esophagus and 24 hours pH monitoring are enough to determine which type of surgery you should have done.
And this surgery can set you free from the symptoms.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
