Is Gangrene Contagious?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Apr 2017
Question: My mother is 95. Had a sore heal for 9 months. She does not have blood flow to her lower leg. She has had
Several surgerys to try to open the vein and even put in an artificial vein (during the last two weeks) Neither has worked. The heal wound is down to the bone with dead skin. Now her lower leg is swollen, shines and discolored. We are told that she is getting antibiotics and just to make her comfortable. Basic question is will this be a long painful process for her? Is gangrene contagious?

Brief Answer:
Needs proper blood supply as basic need - gangrene is not contagious.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query about your Mother.
I can understand the plight your Mother and the whole family must be going through.
I have read the history and understood the concerns.
The fact that the blood supply is reduced and surgeries have not improved the blood flow, the healing will be a long process. The basic need for healing is proper blood supply for nutrition of the tissues.
You may discuss about lumbar sympathectomy with your Doctors for them to decide whether this will help your Mother.
I am sure she much be on medication for improving the blood supply.
Please add on multivitamins with Ginseng is there is no cardiac problem as it helps.
Please give feedback about the diagnosis, investigations, surgeries and the medications tried.
Gangrene is not contagious.

I hope this answers your query.
