Is Gastric Bypass Surgery Safe To Undergo For Weight Loss?

Question: Two years ago, I has the gastric sleeve surgery. My weight 268 with a BMI of 42.0, at 5'7". You can imagine the health issues associated with that. Through diet and exercise my weight dropped to 178 and BMI 27.9. However, I slacked off on my diet and exercise and my weight is now 197 with a BMI of 30.9. I have exercised like crazy and tried to return to my diet; however, for the last six months my weight has has hit a XXXXXXX wall and stayed between 194-197. My question, as exercise and diet are getting me no where; should I consider gastric bypass? FYI, for 2/3 of my adult life my weight was 135-140. It was the long, drawn out terminal illness of my late husband that sent my weight into overdrive about seven years ago..

Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist.
Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive method or procedure where the capacity of the stomach is decreased so that you eat less but you have to do dieting and exercise along with it. Gastric bypass is malabsorptive procedure in which food you eat is not absorbed. So there is no need of dieting.
So if with sleeve gastrectomy you are not able to diet and exercise or if they are not working on you any more, you can go for by pass surgery
I hope I have answered your query and this will help you . Wish you a good health
