Is High Cholesterol Level In A 15 Year Old Child A Cause Of Concern?
Question: We recently did a blood work up of my children. My 15 year old daughter is a high performing athlete, training 3-4 hours a day and eating a fairly healthy diet. She is currently 5'3.5 and weights 112lbs. Her cholesterol has been moderately high for last 2 years but this blood test shows even higher. Is this something I should be concerned about and, if so, what is the next step?
Brief Answer:
Nothing serious
Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs,
Your daughter's cholesterol level is slightly above the upper range of normal value. It can be due to her metabolism. In her age there is nothing to worry for high cholesterol level.
She is physically active and she is in very low risk group. So you should't worry.
Hope I could help you
Wishing a good health to your daughter

One final question...would it be relevant to a low or high metabolism?
She has a twin sister that eats half of the food she does and yet weights 20 lbs more. Her sister has a .33 TSH level. Is that relevant?
Regards and thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Actually it depends on the ability of organism to produce cholesterol, it can be seen both in low and in high metabolic types.
About twin sister, who has TSH level of 0.33, I would advise you to have an thyroid ultrasound and other tests done. In case remaining tests and ultrasound are normal, the value of 0.33 is not significant. Anyway I would advise you to retest it in a year.
