Posted on Fri, 11 Jul 2014
Question: Hi I'm 62 and have a 7cm hydrosalpinx in R tube and 3cm in my left tube. My doctor is recommending a full hysterectomy. Is there any risks if I have no treatment?

Brief Answer:
Do you have any symptosm for this?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

Hydrosalpinx is nothing but fluid collection in the uterine tubes. The single and most common risk is that they may cause symptoms like pain and abdominal discomfort in the short run with a potential of a bacterial super infection in future is not drained out. This would never transform into cancer.

It is really no indication for total hysterectomy. I am sure your doctor has other information he has factored in and has decided to propose hysterectomy at this time. If it were for the hydrosalpinx with severe symptoms, a procedure to get rid of the tubes alone would be less invasive and safer. I think there is something we are missing here and your doctor should be able to say with precision why he is opting for this as treatment for your hydrosalpinx at this time.

In all, the risk at your age is that of acute pains and abdominal discomfort. In the long run, it can become infected to cause salpingitis. There is no risk of a possible cancer in future.

I hope this helps. I wish you well and thank you so much for using our services. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
