Is Increase In Aortic Root Diameter A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 Oct 2015
Question: My aortic root diameter increased from 2.7-3.7 in one year. I have EDS in addition to some valve changes from rafiation in 1987 for Hodgkin's. Should I worry? I don't think my cardiologist compared to the previous year (she was way behind schedule). My primary is more concerned because of my EDS and the valve changes that are happening-mitral, aortic and triscupid all have sclerotic changes but not severe regurgitation at this time.

Brief Answer:
Aortic insufficiency

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic.

Though it is a significant progression of valvular dilation and diameter but in abscence if symptoms like shortness of breath, generalised body swellings and breathless on lying down only medical treatment is recommended.

If ejection fraction is less than 50% on echo cardiography or more with positive cardiac stress test or breathlessness on mild exertions are indications of surgical options like valve replacements.

Using medications like angiotensin blockers or diuretics or digoxin in some cases after discussion with cardiologist, may help with the symptoms.

Hoping you a speedy recovery. If you dont have any more questions, kindly close the discussion. Regards.

I actually do have symptoms-shortness of breath, chest pain, severe fatigue with minimal exertion, weight loss (15 pounds in 1 month-not trying)- but my ejection fraction was normal as were the dimensions of the chambers. My primary was not convinced my cardiologist compared things so has referred me to a cardio-thoracic surgeon for another opinion. I feel like I have the flu all of the time. I just wanted to know what to expect as there was no change in the root in previous years and now there is and my symptoms are progressing.

Brief Answer:
Need for a surgical intervention

Detailed Answer:
Hi! In presence of all these symptoms, regardless of the ejection fraction, surgical options are indicated, but first other causes of shortness of breath, chest pain and exertional dyspnoea should be ruled out, and valve insufficiency should be isolated as the precipitating cause.

Your GP did it right, when asked about the opinion of a cardio thoracic surgeon as he will be the most appropriate person to give final verdict keeping in view all other Comorbids, whether to go for a surgery or not.

Hoping you a speedy recovery. If you dont have any more questions, kindly close the discussion. Regards.
