What Causes Numbness, Tightness And Pain In The Face?

My partner is 44years old. Last christmas he felt unwell - high temperature, headache and tingling in his face and right arm. He thought this was a virus and did nothing, following this he felt a slackness in his face. He told me about it and we went to the doctor, he has continued to have numbness, tightness and a pain in his face, headaches, severe fatigue and some uncontrollable jerking in his body (mostly arms and legs - this is worse after doing exherting jobs). He has had an mri, cat scan and a lumbar puncture which have ruled out m.s., cancer and other major illnesses but he is still on a waiting list to see a neurologist. His doctor is treating him for neuralgia at present with increasing doses of tegretol but these do not seem to be doing anything for either his pain, twitching or tiredness. Can you suggest anything? (we have asked the gp to do a test for lymes disease last week). Oona

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

His situation could be related to a possible infection considering the fever. Focal epilepsy can not be excluded either. Has he had and dog bite or tick bite lately? For this reason, I recommend performing a brain MRI with gadolinium enhancement and an EEG. Other tests to consider would be: vitamin D and vitamin B12 plasma levels, antibodies for Lyme disease. In the meantime, I would recommend adding levetiracetam to his current therapy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
