Is Internal Pain Normal After An Emergency C-section Surgery?
I had my second son mid March. I ended up with an emergency section under general anesthetic due to a failed VBAC (I ruptured and the placenta came away)
Is it normal to still have internal pain 15 weeks on? Sometimes its sharp and stabbing and other times it feels like my insides are on fire.
Could be myofascial pain or pain due to adhesions.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns.
A small number of women do suffer from such pain after cesarean section.
It could be due to
1. Adhesions in the abdomen formed after cesarean section and a lurking subclinical infection. See your doctor for evaluation for the same ( pain during internal examination, vaginal discharge, increased CRP on blood test all suggest infection). If there is infection you will need a course of antibiotics.
2. Myofascial pain- Due to changes in hormones after delivery there can be spasms in belly muscles and pelvic muscles causing such pain. Examination can show tense belly and pelvic muscles. In this case physiotherapy and non steroidal anti inflammatory medications are of great help. Regular exercises and active day today life helps improve faster.
Do you have any urinary complaints like pain or burning while passing urine. Infection of urinary tract or stone can rarely result in such pain.
It is not pain of endometriosis. If endometriosis was present your doctor would have seen it during cesarean section.
Exercise regularly. Yoga/ meditation are also of great help in healing such pain.
Consult your doctor to find out the cause for the pain.
I hope this helps.
If you have further queries, I will be happy to answer.
