Is It Necessary To Have Clexane For Blood Clot While Travelling Through Flight?
I am a 27 year old female who has had a bloody clot in her left leg after a long haul flight to South XXXXXXX
I am due to fly long haul again and have been advised by the hospital that 1 x 40 mg injection of claxane will see me through the flight if taken a couple of hours before the flight. This is different to what I was advised when last discharged by the hospital and certainly different to what my local GP is saying. I am used to taking 80mg 12 hours before my flight and an injection 12 hours later (usually when in the air) and 1 last injection 12 hours after (once landed) - the long haul flight will be 13 hours in total. I understand if the dosage is now 40mg - but 1 injection just doesn't seem enough to cover me during this high risk area? I have had bad luck with doctors in the past saying I didn't have a clot and it took me going back to A & E 3 times before I was admitted and spent a year on warfarin - this was 3 years ago and I have injected claxane on all long haul flights (I'm still alive thank the lord) but since my doctor changed at the beginning of the year it's like no one really knows and I'm concerned for my safety. Any help would be much appreciated.
One injection of clexan 40 mg 1 to 2 hour prior to journey.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
You have previous history of blood clot. So you are at higher risk of venous thrombosis. Generally body has fibrinolytic mechanism and no major consequences occur with this but in high risk patient prophylactic anticoagulant treatment is advisable.
One injection of clexan 40 mg one to two hour prior to journey is sufficient.
Avoid dehydration. Drink plenty of water. Calf muscle exercise and compression stocking bandage should be used.
Clexan is prescription based medicine so consult your doctor and take treatment according to his written prescription and dosage.
