Is It Necessary To Have Rabies Vaccine After Bitten By A Vaccinated Dog?

Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,
One month back a Labrador pet dog of my friend playfully scratched my wrist and peeled up a small portion of the upper layer skin. It didn't bleed but became reddish, dried after two weeks and now only scar is left. I took vaccine six years back, as it gave me side effect. I was reluctant to have this time. So, I decided to observe the dog.The dog is alive after a month and doing good, except suffered from ticks for a week. The dog was also vaccinated last December. Do, I need to take the vaccine or just leave off. Thank You.

First of all thanks for choosing Healthcaremagic for posting your query.

If the dog has survived for more than 10 days then no need to get Rabies vaccine . In your case its more than a month , so definitely not required to get Rabies Vaccine.

But I would recommend a Tetanus Shot ( one time shot ) if you had not taken in past 3 years.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Regards.

Just out of curiosity, I came across some incidents which claims the dog to be alive more than 10 days or months. In case of stray dogs we can take it as mistaken identification but what about pet dogs? Is it possible for a rabid dog to survive more than a month. Surely, will rate your answer. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
It's very Unlikely

Detailed Answer:
HI

It is very unlikely for a dog to survive for more than 10 days if it is actually infected with Rabies.

Because Rabies is such a bad and devastating disease that it kills the victim in matter of days , hence it's very unlikely for a dog or even a man to survive for a month with rabies .

So don't worry . Just relax.
