Question: Hi, I had an early scan yesterday at 6wks0days from lmp & all that was seen was an empty gestational sac measuring at 6wks0days...ive been told to come back in two wks for another scan but I am so worried as I had blighted ovum at 8wks last year..
I am 100% sure about my dates as I have been trying to concieve for 13mths.. is it possible that a yolk sac & fetal pole could appear in the next few days or should they definately be there by now??
Id appreciate an honest answer as I sm prepared for the worse...it was a scan in a private clinic so I havent been able to dicuss it with my doctor yet.
Thanks,
XXXXX
Brief Answer:
POSSIBILITY OF BLIGHTED OVUM IS QUITE HIGH
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
Trans Vaginal Ultrasound (TVS) can reveal Gestational sac around 4 to 5 weeks and Fetal Heart Beat around 5 to 6 weeks of gestational age. Empty gestational sac is NOT a GOOD SIGN of HEALTHY pregnancy at this stage.
Here, I suggest her to repeat the ultrasound scan (TVS) after 1 to 2 weeks for confirmation. Sometimes, late conception may be the cause of late detection of fetal heart beat. If it is not detected on next ultrasound scan, then possibility of pregnancy loss or MISCARRIAGE (BLIGHTED OVUM) is quite high with above clinical picture.
