Is It Possible To Have A Rotator Cuff Tear Due To Normal Repeated Loading Of The Shoulder Joint?
Yes, its possible.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing to XXXXXXX
It is possible to have a rotator cuff tear due to normal repeated loading (wear & tear) of the shoulder joint or in over use of the shoulder (as in certain occupations engaged in overhead activities) which is termed as DEGENERATIVE rotator cuff tear.
An MRI scan of the involved shoulder joint will confirm the diagnosis of the location and extent of the rotator cuff tear.
• If tear is a partial or small, a trial of conservative treatments is warranted;
conservative treatment includes Activity modification, NSAIDs (Analgesic medications like Advil or Aleve), use of subacromial corticosteroid injections, along with physical therapy to strengthen the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizer muscles.
• Surgical management will be considered for patients who fail to improve after 6-12 months of conservative management.
Hope I have addressed your query. Happy to help further
