Is It Possible To Manage Blood Sugar Levels With Diet And Exercising?
Question: Nine months back I was diagnosed to be diabetic with fasting level 171 and PP 300 in routine check up. Rest of parameter were perfectly OK. The doctor described me tablets but before taking medicine, I drastically modified diet and increased the daily exercise with frequent monitoring of BS. With in 10 days my fasting came back to 100-105 and PP after BF 140 and in the evening after running for 1 km, bs 75-85. However, since last 20 days, my sugar level has suddenly increased with fasting 113- 130 and PP 150-200. In the evening after exercise it is 105-110. What has gone wrong. Kindly advise. I am 49 years old male. I have moderate physical activity during office hours and do walking for 4 km in the morning and jogging of 1 km in evening.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through the question and understand your concerns.
Diabetes is a progressive disease. so with same treatment your blood sugars will increase with time. If after 3 months of diet an exercise, the blood sugars are not always in target, it is better to start on medications. Do an HbA1c ( a blood test for average 3 months blood glucose) which will guide you with treatment.
You can start on Metformin tablets.
Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you

Last night I took metformin500 SR, and checks sugar after 1.5 hour, it was 134. However, on fasting level, it has no effect as it was again 127(5_10 point more than without medicine). I have gone through lot of literature and I wish to know that whether glucagon over production is reason, if so how to manage that. Thanks
Brief Answer:
Check the HbA1c
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
All drugs take some time to achieve blood levels. So yo comment on oral medication , you should take it at least for 5-7 days.
Glucogon excess is also a pathogenesis of diabetes ( one of many causes). The are medications like sitagliptin to reduce that. But the first line medication is Metformin. If your sugars are not controlled in 2-3 months, we have to add medications.
Check your HbA1c - that will give an idea on severity of diabetes.
