Brief Answer: Depends on the need for it Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for writing to healthcare magic. From your query gupisone or prednisolone is a steroid. Now if your doctor has recommended it after complete examination example ..say wheezing uncontrolled, etc.. it's safe if taken only for short duration upto 5 days. Nothing will happen if taken in low dose for XXXXXXX 5 days. In some medical conditions it's given for more than a month like in nephrotic syndrome. However prolonged use without medical advice is XXXXXXX as steroids cause numerous side effects including suppression of immune system, affecting bone growth etc. If you can share with us why exactly your doctor had prescribed it, it would help in giving a more direct answer. Do let me know if I could help you further. Regards Dr Arun

Well my baby had viral fever as well as a bad cough that hasn't left her. It gets worse at nights and continuously coughs. I tried giving her the ventolin inhaler at intervals but today upon consultation the dr felt her cough could lead to wheezing if we do not administer Gupisone. My 3 yr old daughter had slight wheezing today and he thought it would best to put them on Gupisine for 5 days. I am worried that my kids should not be addicted to it and if there is anything herbal or maybe homeopathy I could resort to .

Brief Answer: Short courses of gupisone are safe Detailed Answer: Hi Short courses of gupisone are safe. If given occasionally like once in 6 months or so , oral gupisone is safe. But if your doctor prescribed repeatedly then you should back off . The similar medicine can be given through inhalers in wheezing ( for your older kid if she has repeated wheezing) . Inhalers contain one thousandth of oral medicine. One year of inhaled steroids is equal to one course of oral steroid dose wise but inhalers very safe and effective in the long run. Your younger kid may not need inhaler now. You can try waiting for day or two and if cough or wheezing gets worse you can give gupisone safely. Wishing both your kids good health Regards Dr Arun
