Question: We have a 4 yr. old grandaughter who takes supplements that my daughter-in-law gives her. They may be: chlorella, multizyme, DHA Junior, calcium lactate, spanish black olive, lactic acid yeast. Are any of these dangerous for children? The little girl has 2-3 large stools a day, has frequent foul gas, and her stomach look bloated.

Brief Answer:
Nothing dangerous, but almost all can cause the described symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I understand your cause for concern and would like you to feel free to clarify anything and everything until you feel completely satisfied.

1. Chorella: Used as a source of protein, but as it is algae it almost always causes green-colored foul smelling stools. No other serious side effects or ill-effects

2. Multizyme: Used for lowering blood sugar levels, controlling acid reflux, etc; should be used in moderation, but unless prescribed I do not think it should be used as a regular supplement for children

3. DHA junior: Is perfectly safe and should not really cause any issues. It can result in abdominal bloating and increased intestinal gas, but nothing serious

4. Spanish black oil: Considered good for skin and hair growth; nothing serious but has not been thoroughly tested for side effects as it is more or less a natural product, but in my opinion it should not be an issue

5. Lactic acid yeast: Promotes digestion, but can cause abdominal bloating and irritation when used regularly

None of the products given are dangerous, but almost all of them can easily cause the abdominal bloating, fowl-smelling stool, increased gas production, etc. Please discuss with your daughter-in-law the real requirement of these supplements with helping your granddaughter, so we can discontinue those that are not really required.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
