Is It Safe To Have Gastric Bypass Surgery For Diabetes?
Question: I am considering either LAP band or gastric bypass surgery. My bariatric surgeon says that I am a good candidate for either. However, my endrocrinologist said that I absolutely must have gastric bypass because it works and LAP band usually does not help a person with diabetes. The surgeon says she has outdated information. He also says, however, that because I have had diabetes for 25 years, either procedure could have no effect on the diabetes. How do I figure out what to do?

Diabetes surgery in obese patients seems to be a superior alternative to the current medical treatment. Gastric bypass is an alternative treatment for diabetes. Nevertheless, there are still doubts about the long term benefits.We observed a reduction in depressive and anxious symptoms and also in bulimic behavior, as well as an improved quality of life in the physical, psychological and environmental domains. There was also a decrease in use of antidepressants and appetite suppressants.
but In my opinion i can say that both the procedures are effective and gastric bypass is slightly superior for diabetic individuals

in my opinion the degree of achieved weight loss is the major determinant of return to normal blood glucose levels after bariatric surgery. Normoglycemia can be achieved in long-duration Type 2 diabetes, but a greater degree of weight loss is required than for short-duration diabetes.

Thank you for your answer. I am 69 inches tall and weigh 290. My glycemic index is about 42. I have been reading medical articles from reputable sources, and I am leaning toward gastric bypass surgery. I think my endrocrinologist based her thoughts on the patients she still has, many of whom may not have followed the dietary guidelines for post surgery. Please let me know if you have further thoughts. Thank you

in my practice we are dealing with many cases of obesity with and with out diabetes
in most of them who had failed to Controll there diet after surgery is having a very poor outcome
But in individuals who are maintaing good diet they are enjoying very good results and most of them stopped insulin and are on metformin only
The complications related to diabetes is not reversible even with surgery due to metabolic memory
