Is It Safe To Take Meprobamate For Pain?
Question: I have been taking Meprobamate off and on for 50 years. It is the only thing that will relax the muscles when they tighten up between my shoulder blades. I know it was originally prescribed for anxiety which I do not
have and when I recently changed doctors for other reasons they refuse to give me a refill. I have only taken
30 400 mg pills since Sept. 9, 2014 - about average of 1 1/2/week. I am 83 years old and suffer a lot of pain
due to the fact I will not take a host of other pills that are addicting.

Brief Answer:
meprobamate isn't the best drug......
Detailed Answer:
It's got a lot of complexity in how it interacts with the liver. It is a sedative. It tends to be very sticky and to last a long (and not predictable) time.
BUT 1 1/2 a week is very little. It won't give withdrawal/addiction/problems at that amount.
It also won't be in you and won't be doing anything for most of the time.
There are many other muscle relaxants that are not sedatives and won't do the same things as meprobamate. On the one hand, they really might not be as good. On the other hand you can take them daily and they will be safer.
flexeril, robaxin, buspar, skelaxin are some of the many muscle relaxants out there.
