Is It Safe To Take Protinex By A Type 2 Diabetic Patient?

My mother is 57 years old and is diabetic (type 2) since last 10-12 years and taking glucoryl m1.
She has normal blood pressure since last about one year and not taking any medicine for it (earlier it was high and taking cardace 2.5).
My question is that how safe is it to take Protinex (Sugar free version with Vanilla flavor) in diabetes type 2?
It can be used safely.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your question.
I can understand your concern.
Protinex Sugar Free is a good source of proteins along with micronutrients and minerals.
It's glycemic index is low hence can be used in Diabetes patients.
It should be used as nutritional supplement and not substitute to routine diet.
In diabetic patient with normal heart and kidney function Blood pressure goal is less than 140/80.
Tab Cardace is used for blood pressure but it can be used in diabetic nephropathy even with normal blood pressure.
It is advisable in your mother to screen for diabetic nephropathy and other complications of diabetes.
And accordingly decision should be taken regarding Tab Cardace.
Hope I have answered your question.
I will be happy to answer your follow up questions, if any.
Otherwise you can close the question and rate the answer.

Thanks.
I would like to bring into notice that after taking Protinex (Sugar free, Vanilla flavor), urine glucose reading was observed as +4. On next day onward (not taking Protinex now) glucose level is now normal. This behavior was not understandable and I was looking for its answer.
Further, as per your advice, we should screen for diabetic nephropathy and other complications of diabetes. Can you please advice how this can be done like which tests etc need to be done to rule out these.
Do we in XXXXXXX have facility for Pancreas transplant? Is it a good option for DM type 2 ? If yes, where?
Also, Cardace was stopped on Doctors advice.
Pancreatic transplantation alone is done in selected cases of Type 1 diabetes
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your follow up question.
It is important to monitor her blood sugar levels and not urine sugar level.
- Check her fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels.
- HbA1c level which help in knowing her diabetes control over past 3 to 4
months.
Though Protinex Sugar free is labelled as sugar free it contains certain amount of calories (approximately 76 kcal per scoop) so some amount of fluctuation in blood sugar level will occur after starting it. But blood sugar level monitoring with adjustment in diet and anti-diabetic medications can solve the problem.
Regarding screening for diabetic complications-
1) For Diabetic Nephropathy:
- Renal function test.
- Urine albumin creatinine ratio.’
- Ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis.
2) For Diabetic Retinopathy:
Consult ophthalmologist for fundoscopic examination.
3) For Diabetic neuropathy and foot complications:
Consult your diabetologist for detailed foot examination.
4) ECG and if required 2DEcho depending upon history and ECG findings.
5) And other tests depending on clinical examination.
Pancreatic transplantation usually done along with kidney transplantation in patients with diabetes with advanced kidney failure.
Pancreatic transplantation alone is done in selected cases of Type 1 diabetes and not in Type 2 diabetes.
Regarding Tab Cardace you should follow your doctor's advise.
Hope I have answered your question.
