Brief Answer:
May be prescribed with caution.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to Healthcare Magic!
Klonopin is a
benzodiazepine and benzodiazepines have similar action as alcohol on some brain receptors. That is why, benzodiazepines are often used by people with
alcohol dependence as a substitute for alcohol. This is the reason why doctors avoid prescribing benzodiazepines to people with alcohol dependence.
As far as Klonopin is concerned, because of its slow onset and long duration of action, it does not give a "kick" which people usually find with
Xanax. So, chances of abuse and dependence are less with Klonopin as compared to other benzodiazepines like Xanax. But I do wish to assert that Klonopin dependence is not uncommon and people with alcohol dependence are at a greater risk.
In your case, I guess your doctor chose to prescribe it for two reasons. One, he must have felt that you needed it to control
anxiety. Second, he must have felt that you are at a stage where you can understand your previous issues and take sensible decisions. Since your doctor is confident of your ability to control your behavior and take the medicine only as prescribed, I do not have any concerns. However, I would just like you to be aware that there is a risk of dependence so that if in future, you notice any kind of tolerance or withdrawal, you can discuss it with your doctor.
Please also note that benzodiazepines are only a short term solution for anxiety. SSRIs provide better relief in the long run.
Best wishes.
