Question: I recently saw an ad on television of stroke in women taking Latuda for depression. Is this a serious risk? I'm recovering from a stroke now & surely don't want another one! Thank you, XXXXX
Brief Answer:
applies to elderly with dementia psychosis
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
All medications are associated with potential risk that may or may not occur.
There is a risk of stroke in elderly persons with dementia associated psychosis. This means persons who have dementia and as a result of the dementia , are also having psychotic symptoms.
This is true for all anti psychotic medications. The FDA requires them to all have this warning but as stated it is for elderly with dementia associated psychosis.
The exact reason this group is at risk is not entirely clear but it was noticed during 17 medical studies. It is possible that there are other derangements that are made worse by the use of these medications in this group of persons. This risk was 1.6 more than those not using the medication.
It is understandable since you had a prior stroke that you are concerned but if you are not in this group of persons, you would not be considered at increased risk.
I hope this helps , feel free to ask any other questions
