Is Limping Normal In A 2 Year Old?
Bowing of the leg. Rickets must be ruled out
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX XXXXXXX Hi
Good evening!
I appreciate your concern for your son.
I noted the brief history given and the uploaded picture.
It seems to me there appears to be some sort of the bowing of the leg suspicious of rickets. Rickets can occur if your child's body doesn't get enough vitamin D or if his or her body has problems using vitamin D properly.
Physiologic bowing will usually improve as the child grows (3-4 years old) without treatment.
By the time the child is 3-4 years old, he will normally develop.
Dietary deficiency of Vitamin D is the most common form of rickets.
He needs vitamin D and calcium supplements.
Give him Vitamin D rich diet such as milk, eggs, fish, cereals & some fruit juices. Besides there are certain foods that have been fortified with vitamin D, such as cereals, milk or orange juice can be beneficial.
He must also have an adequate exposure to sun light (as ultraviolet rays stimulate the synthesis of Vitamin D in the exposed skin).
Since he was examined last year by an orthopedic surgeon, I would advise you to get him examined by a pediatrician for proper evaluation and some lab tests to rule out rickets.
Hope I could answer your query.
It can occur one one side also.
