Infant. On Vitamin D Supplements And Breastfed. Prescribed Calcium, Iron And Multivitamins. Is This Required?

Hi Doctor,

This is Sreeparna and little boy is just over 10 months. So far he was only taking Vitamin D supplements. I breast feed my boy as he needs along will home made food(vegetables and fruits). He is doing alright.

We have shifted our place and visited a new doctor close by. He has suggested calcium, iron and multivitamins as well with vitaminD. Do I really need to give him so much. Also can we start salt and sugar in his diet from now?

Thanks
Sreeparna

Hi Sreeparna,

Thank you for your query.

If your son is having a balanced nutritious diet then no supplements are required. In case your son is anaemic then you need to give him iron supplements. In my practice I encourage mothers to feed their babies well rather than rely on supplements.

Yes, you can certainly give salt and sugar to your son. He should at this age be eating the same food that you are having.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your son all the best.
