Is Liver Metastases Detected In A CT Scan?
Question: Can a ct scan detect a liver meta clearly ?
Brief Answer:
CT imaging of choice for liver metastasis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Computed Tomography (CT) scan upper abdomen is the imaging of choice for detecting liver metastases.
The preference of CT scan for detecting liver metastasis is due to the fact that it can detect the effects of the dual blood supply on the enhancement characteristics of metastases.
CT scan permits better evaluation of the involvement of extrahepatic tissues, including the bones, bowel, lymph nodes, and mesentery.

Thx for ur reply. My father had surgery re colon cancer in march . He was a dukes c1.
His cea then has been as follows -
May 3 XXXXXXX 4
July 6
August 8
He had a ct scan next week Which has revealed a 15 mm lesion on liver ( segment 8). The radiologist stated - appearances keeping with disease progression .
Following an mdt meeting , his onco said they are not sure what it is n now want to do a pet scan .
What are ur views ? If this is a met would they be able to say from the scan ?

Brief Answer:
Confirmatory test
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET scan is more accurate in detecting liver metastases.
If the CT scan has detected 15 mm lesion on liver in segment 8 then PET scan should be done to confirm metastases.

So this more likely
To be met than a benign lesion right. ?
To be met than a benign lesion right. ?
Brief Answer:
Most likely metastasis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
As the size of the lesion is 15 mm in the CT scan and CEA is also rising the lesion in the liver is most likely to be metastasis and that is why PET scan is required to confirm the finding.

Thx . Can ct scan trll between a benign and malignant lesion ?
I was wondering y pet scan being done. Is it cuz they think it's a meta and wNt to just confirm by a pet scan .

Brief Answer:
increase uptake of glucose by cancer cells in PET
Detailed Answer:
Hi
CT scan can only detect a space occupying lesion and cannot determine the type of lesion whereas a PET scan can differentiate between benign and malignant lesion as certain cancer cells take increase uptake of glucose in PET scan and that is why it is more accurate in determining metastasis.
