Is Loss Of Bone Density A Side Effect Of Letrozole?
Question: I have heard that loss of bone density can be a side effect of Letrozole. Is this true? And how long would it take for this to show up or be detectable if it does occur?
I have had a Lumpectomy (45 days ago) and radiation (Brachytherapy) for a Ductile Invasive Carcinoma, small (1.6 cm), early stage. Pathology reported clear margins and negative Lymph Nodes (3 sentinel nodes removed). Triple positive.

Effectively, letrozole causes decreased bone mass when taken for long. This is most evident by the 24th month after onset of its use. However, the benefits outmatch this potential side effect and will not stop you from taking it.
Rather, preventive and promotional measures should be put in place. No tobacco, minimal alcohol, daily calcium supplement intake, regular moderate levels physical activities and eating healthy. This will retard or significantly reduce any possible bone mass loss and allow you to benefit from the good effects of this drug. Also, your doctor might consider the option of using bisposphonates for prevention, too!
