Is Medically-induced Coma A Common Practice After A Stroke?

Question: My friend is 37 years old with two small children. She was found on the bathroom floor by her husband in the morning. Paramedic were called and she was not concous (sp?) .. She is now in a medical induced coma. I just so concerned. Is this something that is normally done and Why?

If there is brain swelling, then, it is normal to keep patients in medically-induced coma for a few days (until the brain swelling subsides).
