Is Memory Loss When Suffering From Hemophilia Reversible?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: Dear Dr. Rynne,
I have hemophilia and had an extreme loss of blood from my brain here in Ewa Beach a few months ago from a fall and as a result, my brain is normal except that for the first time in my life i am suffering from short term memory.
This is the only predicament I have noticed from the loss and it is very annoying as I had just retired from my work as top technical librarian at the Shipyard Engineering Library and was driving my car to and from work each day.
According to some research I did on the Internet, this problem is reversible, so I can have my brain restored to normal again to drive and do foreign travel as planned.

I went to your Ewa Beach Kaiser for help when this blood loss occurred.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

XXXX

Brief Answer:
Yes in most individuals the problem is reversible

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Welcome to Health Care Magic

I Dr. Seikhoo Bishnoi, consultant Neuropsychiatrist wil be answering your query.

I can understand your concern. A lot of individuals suffer cognitive decline following blood loss in brain or after trauma. In most individuals with blood loss without significant trauma the memory loss occurs in benign severity. With passage of time the symptoms reverses. If you are finding it difficult to do day to day routine then I would advise you to consult your doctor for proper evaluation.

As you have haemophilia so MRI scan should be done on brain to rule out any presence of hematoma in brain. If MRI comes normal then there is no need to worry. MMSE or XXXXXXX mental status examination can help to find out level of memory impairment. These scores can be used to find out progress of treatment also. Medicines like Donepezil or Memantin can be used to slow down the memory impairment and thus would result in quick recovery. Apart from this spend your time in brain stimulation games like sudoku or crossword.

Natural extracts of Ginkgo Biloba are also useful in such symptoms. Take green tea for at least twice a day. All these methods would result in quick recovery.

Visit a psychiatrist for prescription.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Please ask again for more doubts.
