Is Mild Wall Thickening In The Gall Bladder A Symptom Of Cholecystitis?

default
Posted on Thu, 21 Apr 2016
Question: Do I have cholecystitis? Known gallstones. US says mild wall thickening 5 mm. XXXXXXX gallstones. No bile duct blockage. No evidence of ascites. Negative Murphy's sign. Report says mild wall thickening "may be related to evolving or improving cholecystitis." "Correlate clinicically". Attending physician says wall thickening not clinically significant. He rules out cholecystitis based on clinical findings and other US fidnings No fever. No nausea. No great pain. Just some burning tenderness/achiness in abdomen. Cramps earlier. Still can eat. No stone blocking ducts. Doctor says wall thickening likely temporary due to transient biliary colic episdoe. BUT definitely not cholecystitis.

I am confused. I read on Internet that wall hickening is indicative of cholecystitis. Is this not necessarily the case? Also, my reseaerch shows vast majority of cholecystitis cases are due to bile duct blockage. But my stones are XXXXXXX US shows normal biliary tree. Doctor said no blockage. So if it is cholecystitis as US report suggests may be the case. how can it be so if no stone blocking? What is cause?

So do I have cholecystitis or not based on the above? Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
Cholecystitis unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking
I read your question and i understand your concern. With history of gall stones and diffuse gallbladder wall thickening acute cholecystitis may be a suspicion but other findings should be there which your docto all ruled out one by one.
Your doctor is right. I want you to know thatgallstones alone can cauae gallbladder wall thickening abd previous old infections can do so as well. Nutshell this thickening is not correlated with cholecystitis.
Now stone blocking the duct depends on its size. Usually small stones are notorious forslipping into bile duct. I would want you to have a HIDA scan for gallbladder and see how it goes. If it favours cholecystectomy get your gallbladder out. Meanwhile modidy diet and lifestyle like IBS and eat small frequent meals and avoid fatty and spicy foods. Eat more fiber and fluids and see if it helps.
I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

So not clinically significant for sure? Nothing to worry about? I ask again because everything I read on Web posts back to cholecystitis as diagnosis for wall thickening. What else can be the cause? Am I still struggling to understand what other reason might be for this finding? Should I jus ignore that and find comfort in the other findings like no duct blockage, negative Murphy's Sign, and lack of symptoms like no great pain, no fever, no nausea? BTW, the reports says relatively XXXXXXX gallstones. Should I read anything into the word "relatively"?

My biggest worry is that I am scheduled to take a trip abroad in two days. Should these test results be a cause for me to cancel the trip? it is too risky to travel? I don't want to fall sick and end up in hospital abroad. The doctor told me cholecystitis progresses in first 24 hours so my condition would get worse if gall bladder were really inflamed. It has not gotten worse since I did the ultrasound 24 hours ago. Feeling less pain and still feeling well overall except for some gas. Need to burp often.

It is very unsettling to think about that 5 mm wall finding. I have never had this finding on previous ultrasound. That is a concern. Even if I don't feel sick right now, can this thickened wall manifest itself and flare up in next few days just by being thickened? In other words, even if I am very careful about what I eat?
