Advice regarding psoriasis
Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us
I am dr.kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.
Psoriasis is a chronic immune mediated disease. It presents with scaly, red patches mainly involving scalp, elbows, arms, knee, legs etc.
Treatment depends on the severity/ extent of involvement and consists of topical remedies like corticosteroids cream/ ointments/ lotions, coal tar and salicylic acid ointment, topical vitamin D anlogues (calcipotriol ointment), topical psoralens etc.
Systemic remedies like phototherapy, Immunosuppressives (methotrexate, cyclosporin), biologics (humira, scapho etc) and acittretin etc are used for more widespread involvement with psoriasis along with topicaal remedies.
If your husband has only limited skin involvement he would benefit from just topical treatment.
Certain drugs can exacerbate psoriasis e.g painkillers, antihypertensives etc. Other exacerbating factors include winter season, infections like streptococcal sore throat, alcohol, mental stress and topical irritants etc. Avoidance of exacerbating factors, if identified to be a cause, can also prevent/ delay further recurrences of psoriasis
