Is Radiation Treatment After A DCIS Breast Cancer Mandatory?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jun 2016
Question: I have been operated on for DCIS breast cancer. All cells were removed; no lymph nodes affected. I don't want radiation because I fear extreme fatigue due to already having fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Am I at a great risk of I don't do radiation?

Brief Answer:
Considerations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for the query.

Regarding radiation for DCIS - research has shown that the use of radiation after surgery decreases the risk of local recurrence by 50 percent. In light of this you would be regarded to be at higher risk if you choose not to proceed with radiation.

I understand your concerns regarding radiation contributing to fatigue. I would encourage you to meet with the radiation oncologist to review your concerns. Ultimately it is your decision.

Thank you again for submitting your query.

Sincerely,

Dr Galamaga
