Is Recumbent Cross Trainer Safe To Use When Diagnosed With A Torn Meniscus?

default

Question: Hello Dr. Tayal.
Nustep TRS 4000 T4 Recumbent Cross Trainer

At my physiotherapy they have me use this recumbent cycle that has different levels of resistance to strengthen my legs, but because of my knee issue of the torn meniscus root and thinning cartilage due to my tightened ankle I am concerned about using it and increasing resistance above 5 or 6.

I also walk on a treadmill emphasizing heel toe and trying to keep my right foot straight and not turning rightward. I have t o turn slightly from my hip because of the ankle immobility.. Not too fast.
What do you think about this?

Brief Answer:
Try to exercise at a comfortable resistance only.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
With the torn meniscus and thinning cartilage it is not recommended to put your knee to an extra stress. Increasing the resistance to more than 5 or 6 can cause an undue stress on the knee thus increasing the pain. Try to do graded exercises- with intermittent rest so that you do not put too much strain so as to injure your knee.
I hope this answers your query.

Wishing you good health.

Thank you. I actually felt clicking behind my knee even when trying to walk heel toe, but it seems to feel better.
Last night I even felt a click in the bone to the right side of my knee when I raised my leg.. Does that suggest that the stress of increasing resistance pushed that.bone a little out of place, and then it went back? How many minutes should I do the recumbent bike,?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to decreased joint lubricants.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The intermittent clicking can be due to decreased joint lubricants also. The excessive stress will cause a pain.
The clicking can happen due to pressure changes in the joint capsule also.
The time spent on recumbent bike depends on your practice. You should stop it 4-5 minutes before the pain begins. Gradually increase the time daily by two minutes to notice the change.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Thank you. If the clicking happens evrn when walking heel toe but because of a sudden movement, is my only option Supartz injections, or is it sudden pressure when striking on the toe or even slightly misalignment from the recumbent pressure, which the injections won't help especially since thry needs to be repeated st least once a year?
When I raised my leg while standing last nightI noticed s sudden painless click in the bone next to the knee.bone.

Brief Answer:
Supartz injections will help.

Detailed Answer:
Taking Supartz injections will reduce the clicking. If it is due to slight misalignment then the knee strengthening exercises will help.
A painless click is a harmless finding and may not be related to any internal pathology.

Thank you. The click is at the outer behind the knee apparently when I make the sudden movement or walk too fast and maybe forget myself in walking correctly. I think I also did have a slight misalignment. How often would i have to do the injections to help this to prevent slight Imisalignment and clicking? Unfortunately insurance does not cover that.
Would chiropractic assistance be of any benefit in this situation? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Every 6 months.

Detailed Answer:
I would not suggest you to go for a chiropractic manipulation as it is just a minor problem and chiropractic manipulation can worsen it also. In case you go for injections then it may need to be repeated every 6 months according to the need and severity of the problem.
Regards.

Hi, Dr. Tayal. I just wanted to let you know that I took your advice seriously and am getting the Supartz injections into my knee.

The physiatrist told me she didn't know whether the shots would affect the intermittent clicking in the back of my knee but it would be helpful overall with the effects of thinning cartilage. My orthopedic surgeon seemed to be neutral about the injections.

Brief Answer:
The injections will help.

Detailed Answer:
Taking the injections will help the thinned cartilage and can help the clicking also. In case it helps then do repeat the dose whenever the effect weans.
