Is Regular Menstruation With Heavy Bleeding In A 56 Year Old Woman Normal?

Please advise what to do.
Perimenopause. Do TVS scan to rule out pelvic pathology.
Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,
Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:
1) In most women, natural menopause occurs between 45 to 55 years. It may extend another 2-3 years in some cases to complete cessation of period.
At this time, some women may experience irregular period or heavy bleeding due to hormonal imbalance and decreased ovarian function.
2) In this case, I suggest to undergo one Trans Vaginal Ultrasound scan (TVS) and hormone profile (like FSH, TSH, serum estrogen etc) to rule out underlying pelvic pathology or organic disease. Pap Smear test is also to be done.
3) Review with test results for next management. Iron supplement can be given to combat deficiency or anemia.
