Is Severe Anal Pain Normal Post Fistulatomy?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 May 2016
Question: I had periannal abcess and doctor done a surgery , fistulatomy. It finished exactly 3 weeks ago and the open would is still in proces of healing.
I pass stool 6am in morning, normal and no issues,
But from 10 am till around 1 pm noon , i still have anal pain. ( not pain of wound) but anal pain. This is moderate pain not extreme severe . Ther is some pus discharge from would also

Is it normal to have anal pain even after 3 weeks and why so.? And how long it takes to go, if normal. Is there any infection left in my anus ?

I have no medicines , just do sitz bath in warm water 3 times

Brief Answer:
Hello Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to HCM
Thank you for your query
I understand your concern
Well likely that wound is healing as pain has reduced, intermittent pain especially after defecation can occur due to stretching of wound, so need to avoid straining for stools.
Avoid Constipation by taking plenty of fluids orally, taking high Fibre diet, go for regular walk, can take some fiber supplement like isaphula husk available over the counter at night.
In addition if pain persist or if you develop fever, pus discharging from anal area then get yourself examined locally to see for any infection.
Since you have some pus discharge there is some possibility of residual infection which may need antibiotics after local examination. Can send the pus discharge for culture too.
Hope this answers your questions

Thanks , i am following high fiber diet, just that i am worried about anal pain despite finshed 3 weeks of operation , is this normal despite all steps taken ( high fiber, sitz bath, cleaning done, 20 min walking etc , all doing ), how long does this takes in a normal patient to be pain free. Please note i am not talking about pain in wound external, i have anal pain,

Brief Answer:
Further Clinical evaluation is needed..

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear , Welcome back to HCM,
Thank you for your query ,

Well the exact cause of anal pain needs to be determined after clinical examination of anal area as the operation site is different it is unlikely to cause anal pain unless there was an additional problem like fissure in ano which too needs to be tackled too.

Otherwise the pain should go away in a weeks time which is good enough time to heal the wound if any.

Hope this answers your questions

Wish you a speedy recovery

I met a local doctor and this is for taking second opinion,
The doctor told me that there is pain, is normal. He says there is a stitch near intersphincter muscle, done after fistulatomy. The would is open but there is stitch inside and this may be the reason for pain. He said no infection as he know this by examing wound and no pus discharge, besides no fever or no blood in stool. Hence he says this is normal, let me know how does this sounds to you .

If there is a stitch there then possibly that's the cause of pain.
Also if there is no pus then unlikely there is infection.
That's good news
Best wishes
