Is Swelling In Muscles Common When Diagnosed With Knee Bursitis?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: Is it common with knee bursitis to have swelling develop in the muscles immediately above and below the knee? This knee bursitis developed 2-3 weeks ago and the swelling has come in the past week. I previously have had bursitis in both elbows and both healed through rest. There is some soreness in the swelling, not a lot. No redness. I'm in generally good health. Is rest a reasonable approach for this knee and swelling condition?

Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

Yes swelling in surroundings of the knee joint are common with bursitis. And rest is the key to early recovery and to prevent further wear and tear of the bursa and other knee structure.

But this isn't elbow joint this time. This is the main weight bearing joint of the body. We can not give much rest to the knee joint to get it heal up without an added inflammation from activity. So, you need medications too.

If I was your treating physician I would have prescribed you Celecoxib (better than Aleve) and Dexamethasone drugs, if not allergic to. Your physician may provide you with a prescription for the same.

Aleve is an NSAID and may damage your stomach. Don't take it anymore. Take instead Celecoxib a more selective drug to affect the pain areas and leave unaffected the stomach and you will not get gastric discomfort or gastric ulcers.

If you feel more soreness and swelling, apply Bengay Ultra Stretch Gel on the painful areas and apply hot spongings.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns. I will be happy to get back to you shortly. If satisfied here, please give a five star rating and don't forget to close the discussion.

Regards!
