Is Swine Flu Dangerous?
I feel my tounge bitter feal from the morning. Not too high little bitterness is there. No feaver. What may the reason for bitternes.
You know swineflu is killing many in the country. I am more worried about me and my family. Is the new swine flu so dangerous. We are in XXXX.
Swine flu is preventable and treatable.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. The most common causes for the bitter taste in the mouth in the morning are gastric reflux, post nasal drip and mouth breathing (dry mouth). Get examined for these causes. Treatment depends upon the cause.
2. Swine flu is not to be feared. The mortality is less than many other diseases and that too in high risk cases only. Usually these cases are seasonal flu. Mild swine flu cases require no testing or anti-viral treatment, only rest at home, adequate fluids and symptomatic treatment for fever, body ache, cough and cold.
3. Vaccination can be taken. Currently it seems to be the same strain as in 2009. It will take 2-3 weeks for immunity to develop. You may still develop Swine flu but the illness will be mild. Once a person recovers from Swine flu, natural immunity to those strains is life-long.
4. Use a 3M brand N95 face mask in crowded areas. Change it once a week.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Only a running nose is unlikely to be swine flu.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. Only a running nose is unlikely to be swine flu.
2. Start him on an anti-allergic (such as cetirizine) and keep him well hydrated. Avoid sending him to school till the week end.
3. Let me know if he develops any new symptoms such as high fever, body ache, fatigue, cough, vomiting, diarrhea or breathlessness. Seasonal flu will also have similar symptoms.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

There is no cause for worry.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. From your description this is not cancerous.
2. The swelling near the uvula will be either due to inflammation due to voice strain, hoarseness, laryngitis or infection.
3. Get his throat examined and routine medication including an antibiotic, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, medicated gargles, bland diet, adequate fluids and voice rest will help him recover quickly.
4. This may also be the onset of the normal voice change at puberty.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Most swine flu patients have a mild illness.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. Swine flu is similar to seasonal flu. If the symptoms are mild there is no need to test or take anti-viral medications. Adequate rest, hydration and symptomatic fever is sufficient to recover in a week.
2. Unless you are a high risk, simple measures such as the ones you are undertaking and using a N95 rated face mask and avoiding very crowded places should be enough.
3. Remember that most patients survive swine flu without any major problem.
4. Vaccination is expected to be available by the month end (March end). If the weather gets extremely hot for a few weeks, swine flu cases are expected to subside. Hence you can assess the situation next month.
5. Your current symptoms seem to be allergic and are not a cause for worry. You need an anti-allergic medication, in addition to the Mucinex, for a few days.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Realy thanks a lot for reply. At presant there is swibeflu vaccine @mrp 700 for kids and also for adults can it br taken and will it protect. We are in XXXXXXX here no of cases are increasing so to prevent 100% xan v take it and in march if next vaccine come canv take that also .
Yes, vaccination can be done.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. Yes, you can get vaccinated. Check if it is an inactivated or live attenuated virus vaccine. Check of it is the trivalent vaccine against H1N1, H3N2 and Influenza B (Quadrivalent is not available). You should not take multiple vaccinations so close together.
2. Immunity takes 2-3 weeks to develop.
3. There is no 100% protection. About 80% protection. If swine flu infection develops after successful vaccination, it will be a mild disease.
4. See that no one with recent flu symptoms or illness is vaccinated as this can flare up the infection.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards.
Let your physician decide.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. Let your physician decide the timing of the vaccination, since there is a histiry of recent illness.
2. The vaccination does not guarantee that swine flu infection will not happen. However if it does develop, it will be a mild non-life threatening infection.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. Slight throat irritation is not likely to be swine flu.
2. Unless it worsens, there is no need for any active treatment.
3. You can gargle with Betadine oral rinse (diluted 50:50 with water).
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Fear will it develop today or tommorw and will it b swine flu. I gave already rajen influenza vaccine will it give some effect .
Only dry throat and irritation does not indicate swine flu.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. Without fever and cold there is no possibility of swine flu.
2. In fact most of the patients I am treating have all the symptoms of swine flu (including severe abdominal symptoms) and yet are not swine flu.
3. Only throat irritation should not raise the worry about swine flu.
4. After receiving influenza vaccine, the body requires 2-3 weeks to develop immunity to only those strains of the flu virus. Efficacy of the vaccines is only up to 80%.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
