Is Testosterone Level Of 331 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Mar 2017
Question: Hi, I am a 29 y/o male with a total T level of 196 taken in the afternoon on a scale of 250-1100. The test was repeated at 8am and the level came back at 331 on the same scale. 7 years ago my total T was 439 taken at noon on a scale of 195-ll38. I experience chronic fatigue, low stamina and energy swings everyday. My doctor is telling me my levels are normal, but I am not convinced.

Brief Answer:
There are conflicts about Testosterone levels .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .

Based on the reports of your Testosterone levels done at two different timings I would state that ideally it is the morning time that has been accepted world wide to be the best time to get accurate measurement of your Testosterone levels .

However there is no standardization in age related levels of Testosterone because of different methods being used by the laboratories in measuring Testosterone levels .and the report issued by lab always mentions reference range of Testosterone levels done at that particular lab making it more complicated for common man to understand the report .

It is customary practice to consider optimal levels of Testosterone for individual to get symptoms of low testosterone levels which is accepted to be 400.Clinical research still hasn’t determined a hard threshold level for when symptoms of low T begin appearing as it is related to your physique and metabolism which differs from person to person .. Some recent research suggests that symptoms of low Testosterone might begin appearing in men when their total testosterone level dips below 320.

In a given situation you can start Testosterone supplements in low doses and repeat your blood test after two months observing the improvement in your symptoms ..

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

I am being referred to an endocrinologist for further review of my lab results. Do you think it better to see a urologist or an endocrinologist when dealing with my issue? Are there any specific questions that you would recommend I ask the specialist, as I do not want to be dismissed as being "in range" because research has been limited on this topic. I do have many symptoms that could be associated with low "T". I understand that T levels fluctuate during the day, but I am curious why mine dropped below what is "acceptable" and if this could be the cause of my daily energy swings and low stamina. In your professional opinion, would you feel comfortable giving me an acceptable "T" reference range for a 29 y/o otherwise healthy male? I feel as though my numbers represent an 80 y/o male.

Brief Answer:
Better you consult qualified Endocrinologist

Detailed Answer:
hello
Thanks for follow up .

It would be better if you consult Endocrinologist than urologist .

He will carry out few more investigations to assess your problem and for arriving at definitive conclusion as regards further treatment .

As stated earlier the reference range mentioned in blood report are the values of T levels of individuals who have attended at that particular lab which may be from the age of 20 years to 80 years of age .

If you compare your levels with age related chart which is accepted world wide your levels are slightly on lower side of normal values for age of 29 years that is the reason I have suggested you to take Testosterone supplements in small doses

Thanks and Regards.
