Is Tetanus Vaccination Necessary For Injured Foot?

default
Posted on Sat, 12 Jul 2014
Question: my daughter got her last tetanus shot in 2008 when she was 5.5 years old. I believe she's due for one on her 11th birthday this Sept.

She just cut her foot lightly on a rusted pool ladder. Does she need to get a tetanus shot immediately?

Brief Answer:
In my opinion she need a Tetanus toxoid shot.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Since the wound was caused by a rusted pool ladder and her last Tetanus vaccination was over 5 years ago I think she need a tetanus shot even if the wound wasn't very deep (just to be prudent).
Tetanus is a very serious infection and It is better not to take the risk.

Keep the wound clean. Apply an over-the-counter antibacterial or antiseptic treatment that can help prevent bacteria from growing.
Since the wound is in her foot ,bandage it to prevent it from getting infected.

My opinion is that she should go for an Tetanus toxoid shot.

Hope my answer has helped.
Let me know if you have further queries.

Wish a good health to your daughter.
