Is The Long Term Use Of Nukast Advisable?
Question: Dear Dr.
I am 28 year old male, Last year i had sudden breathing problem so consulted a physician. He suggested me to take Nukast (1 tab daily at night) tablet. It's almost a year I am taking this medicine. Now I feel myself healthy. Is it advisable to continue it for rest of my life? Using Nukast i found it gave me some new problems/side-effects. If i mistakenly miss the tablet a day I find Rashes in my body next day, sometimes i feel nasal congestions also. Please suggest me.

Your breathing problem is most likely due allergy. It can be anything like dust or if you have pets then it can be hair from that.As you are taking Nukast which has an antihistamine Levocetirizine and mast cell stabilizer Monteleukast you are not getting an allergic attack.This medication is usually given for long term prophylaxis from allergy if you cant keep away from causative agents. The best treatment is recognise your allergic causing agent and be away from it.If you do that then you can stop nukast.As you are getting a rash when you discontinue medication means you are constantly under exposure of allergen.It is not the side effect of the drug.The drug is only protecting you from allergic reaction.

Thank you doctor for the suggestion, but prior i never had such rashes even before starting taking Nukast. How could i know what i causing such allergies? As sometimes I have to stay outside of XXXXXXX if i don't find nukast inside my medicine box how to protect myself from such rashes or nasal congestion?

Allergic episodes and symptoms can vary according to amount of exposure and long time exposure.You had a long time exposure so you got the new symptom as skin rash now.Some will only have initially itching in eye.Later on they develop nasal congestion.Then further they may get other symptoms like wheezing or rashes also.
You can find out your causative agent for allergy by doing an allergy test.You can get that skin prick test done in all major hospitals.If you can find that allergen then you can be away from that.
Usually dust allergy is main causative for most people.In such case regular vacuuming of your house everywhere helps also.Nukast (Levocetirizine and Monteleukast) is available everywhere.But you may get with another brand name in other countries.
