Is The Weight Of 4.9 Kg Normal For A 2 And Half Year Old Child?
From last week onwards I started noticing that he is not interested to drink formula milk, and I feed him with only breastmilk. Is this sufficient for my baby?
Birth weight was : 3.3kg,
Now at 2.5 months his weight is 4.9kg. Is my baby growing fine?
Continue exclusive breastfeeding
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms XXXXXXX
Ideally the babies should be exclusively breast feed till age of 6 months . So its a good sign that baby wants more of breast milk and is refusing formula feeds. Many of the mothers have the apprehension that whether their breast milk alone is sufficient. I would like to reassure you that it's sufficient alone. More the baby ducks at the breast , more the breast get stimulated to secrete more milk and fulfill the requirements of the baby . Giving top feeds or eexternal feeds will be counter productive.
Now the next question that usually arises in mother (as in your case too) is how do I know if the breast milk is adequate? . The answer is simple , just keep observing the following things and if they are fulfilled then the baby is getting adequate feeds
1. Baby is well latched to breast : Majority of areola is in baby mouth
2. You can see fullness in cheeks when baby is sucking
3. Swallowing movement and sound of swallowing can be heard
4. Baby sleeps for 1 to 2 hours at least after every feeds
5. Baby is not hungry after feeds
6. Urine output is adequate
7. Baby is passing milk stools: They are yellow in coulis with white granular particles
8. Weight gain is adequate as decided by your Pediatrician
Your next query is whether weight gain is adequate. Your babies weight gain is absolutely fine. Ideally the baby should double their birth weight by 5 months of age. Your baby is 2.5 months and 4.9 kg and it seems to be on track.
Do continue exclusive breast feeding till 6 months. In Case you face any difficulty or have any query ,do write to me directly.
Wishing you a very happy motherhood.
God bless you
Take care
