Is There Any Possibility Of Having TB In Schizophrenia Patients?

There is a possibility of having TB in patients with Schizophrenia.
TB is caused due to a bacterial infection and can occur in any person, irrespective of whether the person has a mental illness or not. However, the mechanism of causation and pathology of TB is different and independent of the mechanism of causation and pathology of Schizophrenia.
It has been found that the prevalence of co-existing medical problems is relatively more in patients with mental illness than compared to the general population. So, if the person who you are referring to has any symptoms suggestive of TB like chronic cough with sputum, prolonged fever or weight loss or any histroy of contact with TB, she needs to be evaluated further. Sputum testing and chest X-ray are the common tests used to detect a chest TB.
Wish you all the best.
