Question: Hi My son is 14 years old. His blood test has shown Vitamin D insufficiency with result of 13.7 ng/mL. We have been advised to give him Calcirol 60000 units (once a week) and Shellcall (daily). Kindly advise if this treatment is fine and whether there can be any side effects.

Brief Answer:
Treatment is correct and get vitamin D testing done again after 2 months

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,
Thanks for writing in to us.

In the therapeutic dose vitamin D supplements do not cause any side effects.

The suggestion given by your doctor is correct.

It is suggested to do vitamin D level testing again after taking treatment for 2 months. This will tell us response to treatment.

Please also tell your son to spend 30 minutes in morning every day from 8.30 to 9.30 in the sun. This will help generate vitamin D. If there is no time in morning then he can be in sun in afternoon 30 minutes from 3.30 to 4.30 and this will help.
