Hi
Thanks for posting your query

The main Objectives of Diabetic diet are:
•      To maintain adequate nutrition.
•      To achieve and maintain desirable body weight.
•      To maintain normal blood sugar levels.
•      To prevent, delay or minimize the onset of chronic degenerative complications.
•      It is important to control the amount and time of food intake.
•      No Fasting or Feasting.

Below are some recommendations which are to be followed by a diabetic patient:
     Both diet and exercise play an important role in maintaining your blood sugar in the normal range.
     Eat small, frequent, regular meals daily. Do not starve/fast or skip meals. Consume at least 6-7 small meals at regular intervals daily.
     Consume whole cereal and pulse products like whole wheat, oats, ragi and broken wheat.
     Avoid refined foods like maida, white bread, naan and buns.
     Rice should be restricted to only one meal a day (lunch) and in the prescribed quantities only.
     Consume at least 2 cups of vegetables daily. Among vegetables, restrict the intake of potatoes, sweet potatoes, yam, beetroot, pumpkin, Colocasia and tapioca as they are high in calories. Other vegetables can be steamed or cooked with minimum quantity of oil.
     Include at least I cup of salad every day. You can add skimmed curd and sprouts to them.
     Consume fruits as a whole with the skin. Avoid fruit juices. Among fruits, restrict banana, mango, sapota, custard XXXXXXX watermelon, pineapple, jackfruit, butter fruit and all dries fruits like dates, prunes, raisins and apricot.
     Include fruits like XXXXXXX guava, orange, pears, papaya, sweet lime and pomegranate.
     Use skimmed milk products or remove the cream off curd, milk and buttermilk before consumption.
     Non – vegetarian foods like skinned out chicken, fish (steamed or grilled or gravy form) and egg whites can be consumed 3 – 4 times a week. Restrict your intake of beef, pork, red meat, egg yolk and organ meats.
     Increase your intake of fiber XXXXXXX foods – whole cereals and pulses, vegetables like peas, beans, lotus stem and fruits with the skin.
     Limit your oil consumption to ½ a liter of oil per person per month. Use minimum amount of oil for cooking, about 3 tsp for the whole day.
     Restrict proprietary health drinks like boost, horlicks, Bournvita etc. Also restrict intake of carbonated beverages as they are loaded with sugar.
     Avoid all bakery products as most of them are made from refined cereals and have high amounts of saturated fats and simple sugars.
     Avoid sugar, honey and jaggery. Artificial sweeteners not more than 4 numbers/pellets per day.
     Restrict salt intake wherever possible. Avoid papads, pickles and preserved foods.
     Avoid consumption of chocolates and sweets.
     Increase your intake of water to at least 2 ½ litre/ day.
     While eating out, make smart choices. Opt for boiled, steamed, baked or grilled foods instead of fried foods.
     Give a time gap of at 1 ½ - 2 hours between your dinner and bedtime.
Physical activity:
•     Maintaining your weight in the normal range is important to keep your blood sugar under control.
•     Involve yourself in 30 minutes of brisk walking every day.
•     Physical activity helps increasing insulin sensitivity and controls blood sugar levels.
•     Through the rest of the day, do keep yourself physically active. Simple ways to become more physically active include walking to the store or taking the stairs instead of the elevator or even walking to the water dispenser to refill your bottle of water
