Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

There are a few reasons for loud and foul smelling burps. An important reason is the production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gas originating from sulfur-containing proteins in certain foods (see below) after they are broken down in the stomach or small intestine by sulfur-reducing microbes.

Your husband should follow these lifestyle measures:

1)     He should avoid excessive intake of asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, garlic, mustard, onions, pack choi, parsley, sweet potatoes, Swiss chard, beans, peas, lentils, soy, carob, jicama, alfalfa, corn, sunflower seeds, oats, cashews, walnuts, almonds, sesame seeds, tea and coffee and red meat.

2)     Try raising the head of your bed about four inches with blocks.

3)     It also might help to avoid eating or drinking for two hours before you lie down.

4)     To help control the stomach acid, one should not drink alcohol or drinks with caffeine in them, or eat chocolate or spicy or greasy foods.

5)     Also take some antacid but if the symptoms are severe, then you may need drugs like proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole after consulting your doctor.

If the symptoms persist then your husband may need certain investigations. These include hydrogen breath test (for H.Pylori), gastric emptying tests for gastroparesis, upper GI endoscopy for peptic ulcers and ultrasound gall bladder for gallstones.
