MRI Findings Show Diffuse Parenchymal Volume Loss, Non-specific White Matter. Meaning?
Question: I received MRI findings back today...It said: Diffuse parenchymal volume loss. Patchy foci of elevated T2/FLAIR signal hyperintensity in the periventricular and subcortical white matter are non-specific but likely secondary to chronic ischemic change. What does this mean?
Hello there,
Diffuse parenchymal volume loss means there is shrinkage in the size of your brain, however nothing to panick about it as it can be a normal ageing process or can also be due to decrease in blood supply to your brain or also there are various other conditions which can cause this sort of picture. If you have symptoms like loss of memory, unsteadiness of gait or forgetfulness , you contact your doctor.
The T2/FLAIR hyperintensities are nothing but changes in your brain due to less of blood supply.
You haven't mentioned if you suffer from HT or DM as even this diseases over long term can cause decrease in blood supply to brain and above picture.
Hope this helps you.
Take care and regards

I have a thyroid problems, my doctor has mentioned possible Hashimoto syndrome, take 200mcg daily. Hypertension no, DM diabetes mellitus possible, have gotten type two and on insulin twice daily. Does this info help?
Hello there,
Yes Diabetes also predisposes to this problem.
But the there is no point worrying about it . Best is to have a good control your diabetes and this should help you.
The changes in the brain are not going to go easily but you can try to control further damage by taking care of your DM.
Thyroid problems also need to be attended for with medications and being compliant on taking them.
